As you may know I LOVED Daisy Jones & The Six, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo AND Malibu Rising, so it felt pretty inevitable I would love TJR’s earlier work too, and I wasn’t wrong.
Maybe In Another Life is very much like that Gwyneth Paltrow movie from the 90s; Sliding Doors, whereas it focuses on one moment in Hannah’s life where she had to make a decision and how that decision would lead to different lives. The decision she has to make is whether to stay out partying with her childhood sweetheart or go home with her best friend and husband. One life leads to a traumatic and tragic accident, the other leads to an unexpectedly difficult future with tough decisions to be made.
I was really worried that it would be difficult to keep track of two different timelines with all of the same characters in but actually it worked so well. I think maybe it worked because for such big stretches of one storyline Hannah was confined to a particular environment (don’t want to give too much away). As always, TJR’s writing is just so easy to follow and I fell in love with Hannah and Gabby so quickly. I did find it a different style to the other books I read, probably a less unique style and more of an expected romance, but I still loved it.
I definitely preferred the version of Hannah who left the party with Gaby. If you’ve read it which one did you prefer?
Also, I’d definitely give a trigger warning for baby loss and pregnancy for this story. I wasn’t personally prepared for it and it was tough at times.
