Earlier this month I saw that DiabetesUK were hosting a one million step challenge to raise money and awareness about Diabetes. As my sister was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes 20 years ago, I have grown up knowing about it, however, I am always quite shocked how little other people know about it; I think the worst I’ve witnessed is working in a busy bar and the staff giving everybody full sugar coke because they couldn’t hear whether people wanted diet or not. Then, last summer my Mam was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and this is where even I was definitely ignorant. My Mam definitely does not fit the standard category for Type 2 diabetes, she is not overweight, unfit or eats particularly unhealthy so I definitely wasn’t expecting it. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to not only raise some money (please feel free to sponsor me here) but also raise awareness.
I will be sharing updates here on my blog, but also on my instagram along with some facts about diabetes (my instagram is sami_pee). Please get in touch if you have a story to tell or want to get involved! My team is the DiaBetty’s and we are happy to have lots of members! In the meantime wish my luck as 10,870 steps per day for 3 months is quite a feat!!! It all starts tomorrow!!
