I missed this film in the cinema so was pretty happy when I seen it was on my Singapore Airlines flight; yes I know I love a cheesy RomCom. First things first though, why did they use the same song to open as Burlesque?!? I genuinely had a moment where I was waiting for Christina Aguilera’s voice to start up and thought they’d put the wrong film on… but not got JLo and the film I’d picked.
Second Act tells the story of Mya (Jennifer Lopez) who is a successful assistant manager of a discount store, however, when she is passed over for manager simply because she doesn’t have a degree she is mad. Her friend Joan (Leah Remini) and son step in to help out and send an embellished CV out to some local businesses. Almost too good to be true, Mya gets an interview to be a product designer for a big company and quickly makes an enemy of the boss’ daughter Zoe (Vanessa Hudgens).
I assumed the film was all about her making a successful career for herself, however there was a lovely undertone about finding lost family. Obviously it was cheesy and predictable, but it was the perfect Romcom. My only real criticism would be the lack of eye candy, Milo Ventimiglia is in it but his role is very limited and let’s be honest he isn’t looking as hot as he used to! I definitely did enjoy it though and Ariana is a character to watch out for with a number of witty one liners! Oh and of course JLo’s body is amazing; although I wasn’t sold on the typical dance scene. I’d give it 3.5 stars if I had to rate it.
