Book of Shadows (Sweep #1) – Cate Tiernan

I was in a super cute second hand book shop in Alnwick a few weeks ago and saw some of the Sweep books by Cate Tiernan. I had read the books when I was a teenager and absolutely loved them and thought maybe it’ll help me fall back in love with reading again. They didn’t have the first books in the shop so I headed to Amazon and actually ordered real books instead of kindle ones. There are 15 books altogether in the range but they have collated them into books of three so I ordered Sweep Volume 1 which has Book of Shadows, The Coven and Blood Witch in it. However, I’ve decided to do a review of each individual book rather than the volume; let’s see how many I actually get around to reading.

Book of Shadows tells the story of misfit Morgan Rowlands who is quite content not being the popular girl at school; even though her best friend Bree is. When new guy Cal starts school he is mysterious and attractive to pretty much every girl who goes. However, when he invites a collection of people from different groups to a party everybody is a little bit wary. He then invites people to stay and complete a circle with him. Wicca is not something the people of Widow’s Vale have any knowledge or experience of, some of the guests choose to leave but a mismatched group opt to stay. Out of all of the group that stays, Morgan has a unique reaction to the circle which piques Cal’s interest in her.

A nice and easy introduction into the Sweep series. If you are looking for a book with lots of depth and character consideration, this probably isn’t the book for you. But if like me you enjoy some superficial teenage drama every now and again for an easy read go for it!

Now onto book no. 2 – The Coven.
