Let me start by saying, I wasn’t brought up reading Dr Seuss books and I hate the Jim Carey version of the Grinch so I am not sentimentally attached to this story at all. However, I did quite enjoy the new animated version.
With an absolutely bizarre cast: Benedict Cumberbatch as the Grinch, Cameron Seeley (the little girl from The Greatest Showman) as Cindy–Lou Who, Pharrell Williams as the narrator, Kenan Thompson (as in Kenan and Kel) as Mr Bricklebaum and Angela Lansbury as Mayor McGerkle. It is quite bizarre. But it works.
The Grinch tells the story of a Grinch who was orphaned and had nobody to celebrate Christmas with. His heart is too small and he quite happily usually keeps out of Whoville over the Christmas period. But, when he runs out of food; due to emotional eating we can all understand, he is forced to bare the Christmas festivities. And so he decides the solution is to steal Christmas.
The animated Cindy-Lou is soooo cute I loved her, and Max the dog was adorable. The film has the right level of stupid humour and a good Christmas message. I was happy it was very short (IMDB says 1hr 26mins but I’m pretty sure it was closer to an hour), as it wasn’t the most engaging film but I really did enjoy it.
If you want to get into the festive spirit it’s another one not to miss; plus there’s no annoying Jim Carey.
