I am about 90% through the Crazy Rich Asians audiobook and have been throughly enjoying it so I was looking forward to this film. I originally had tickets to go to the Cineworld Unlimited screening a few weeks ago, but I was too hungover and missed it… whoops! But the wait was worth it.
It’s not very often feel good romance films are released anymore, but this definitely was one. I was also really intrigued by the Asian setting too as it’s rare to have a fully asian cast in a Hollywood movie.
The film follows the story of Nick Young; a “crazy rich” professor from Singapore played by Henry Golding, and his girlfriend Rachel Chu; a normal professor raised in the USA played by Constance Wu, as they travel to Singapore to attend the wedding of Nick’s best friend. However, Nick hasn’t told his family about Rachel, nor has he told her about how rich his family are. Leaving her hugely unprepared to enter his world.
My favourite character in the film was DEFINITELY Rachel’s friend Peik Lin (played by Awkwafina) who provided all of the comedic relief; her family describe her as the “Asian Ellen”. And it did the job of making me want to visit all of Asia.
There was a lot missing out of the film compared to the book; as usual, and a lot of the supporting stories were lost. However, it was a decent adaptation, fun and colourful. It could’ve maybe went a little further on the elaborate spending as the book definitely flaunts everybody’s wealth more. Overall though I would definitely recommend it, it was super good! Now excuse me whilst I go and find myself a super rich asian!
